The setting transforms a typical beach day into a challenging activity of sandcastle construction, involving interactive elements such as feisty crabs, pirate gulls, and baby sea turtles that add dynamic obstacles and strategic considerations.

The game encourages players to utilize logic and skill to earn doubloons and pearls, which can be exchanged for upgrades, vibrant crab body art, and other customization options within the store. Multiple challenge levels and performance-based awards motivate continued engagement. Integral to the thematic experience is the exploration of Tropical Beach, where players participate in cleaning up litter, collecting doubloons, seeking pearl targets, and avoiding gull attacks behind natural cover like trees.

Crab Castles adopts an innovative approach within the classic block-building puzzle genre by emphasizing strategic play beyond mere height achievement. The gameplay involves reaching multiple goal lines within set time limits across various levels.

Successful completion of levels involves constructing towers that meet or surpass the first green goal line when time expires, unlocking subsequent challenge levels. These introduce new gameplay mechanics such as controlling a running crab on Tropical Beach to collect trash items before time runs out—a task that requires managing speed and direction. Players can also gather doubloons (points) by hitting pearl targets on the screen, with special levels where collecting all pearl targets resets their state for continued play.

Progression rewards include obtaining platinum doubloons that double point values once all trash and platinum doubloons are collected in a level. Achieving comprehensive collection across levels demonstrates strategic mastery and enhances replayability.
